From 1962 thru 1968 Marlins rimfire rifles (other than the lever actions) used a two letter date code that was stamped on the barrel. This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by law after 1968.Feb 8, 2014 · It did say Marlin Firearms Co. But it only had a 4 digit serial number located under the lever handle on the bottom tang, 3367. No other numbers on the exterior of the rifle. I have a 39A with serial number 73123111 on the tang behind the hammer. The barrel is marked "The Marlin Firearms Co. North Haven. Conn. U.S.A. CAL. 22 S. L. & L.R. MICRO-GROOVE BARREL ORIGINAL GOLDEN-39A. It has the JM proof mark on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The formula is 100-the first 2 digits of the serial # (100-08 =92) They are really nice rifles! The S prefix likely was first used in the 1925-26 era, based on serial number ranges for the non and S prefixed rifles. The HS prefix was used beginning in 1932, until the introduction of the model 39A in 1939.

Without a manufacturing date, all I can do is guess. I did find one online Marlin search site and it indicated that all Marlin 39's with an S prefix were made in 1958 - 59. Boxhead mac. The number "259" is stamped below the lever and on two locations internal... but they all are just "259". The stock has an uncapped pistol grip, and the barrel, marked 39A, does not specify "mico-groove".

You may have to post some pictures to help narrow down a date if you cannot find the serial number. The serial number will tell you when it was made. Try removing the butt stock to look for numbers on the side of the tangs. One thing we can tell you, is with the Micro-Groove rifling, it will hav been made sometime after 1954.
