Pop-off pressures are (don't quote me on this) around 1300-1700lbs. for most diesel engines IIRC, so they can get a little noisy, especially when it's cold out. The truck is a 2006 2500HD with LBZ Duramax and 6-speed Allison, <19,000 miles. The drivetrain has been making what I would describe as a chorus of LOUD cracking, snapping, popping and ticking sounds during cold and warm starts when the ambient temperature is about 65*F and higher. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter. This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when, in fact, it was masked by other noises in the past.

The injector ballance rates are very good, as the truck has 40k on it. I can't locate it, it's easily heard from both passenger and drivers side of truck. Some people do find different brand oil seems to quieten the noise some but experimentation is key for some because not all oils act the same in all engines..

Ticking noise at idle. I have a 06 GMC Duramax and at idle, there is a constant loose sounding ticking noise. It does not sound like necessarily coming from the engine but in the front loser to the grill. Before I take it in and have looked at, I thought I would get someones opinion. I had a 03 GMC Duramax and it never made the same noise.
