I caved after trying to reset to get an S class capital freighter, got an A class instead and used the save editor to upgrade it. So I have an S class freighter with A class stats. I think hyperdrive range can be anywhere between 70 and 80, I don't know the range for fleet coordination or warp efficiency (though I think that's always 0.3).

Talking/hiring Frigates and interacting with derelict F's is fine. Its a pain in the 'assumptions', if you want to upgrade your Freighter obviously, but if you want to- just do it once. Demolish everything on your Freighter for the resources first, then go on an S Class hunt, so no need to repeat this irritating process.
