Low compression 406 build. Built this low compression (8.6) 406 for a procharger, thought I would share the results. Pistons were a SRP due to the Procharger, cam was 226 @ .050, .580 @ the valve, on a 112. AFR 195s were used with a Victor Jr again for the procharger, Holley 770 avenger with a 4 hole spacer, 1 3/4 headers.With a 70 cc chamber head, static compression came out to 10.3:1. My heads flow about 260 at .600" lift, and I'm pretty sure they are all done by 6500 rpm. It will pull to 6900 crossing the finish line, but the big cube small block needs good heads. To me, if you can make the same power with a 6,000 rpm 406 and a 7,000 rpm 355, then the 355 is more likely to break bottom end parts due to rpm. The engine would run better with 6.00/6.20 gears in the 1/8mi. i would say that a 388"er might run 1 tenth better with this much weight, however a 406" junkyard motor, with brodix heads and 6.20 gears i ran 6.26 in the same car. ideally, people should dyno an engine well past peak hp, so they can check average hp in different ranges. pick the best range, and go with that. if the average is better from 7800-9300 vs. 7200-8700, you will go with stall speed at 7800 and shift at 9300. a range of about 1200 rpm is minimum, maybe 1500rpm wide at the max.
