Galebreathe is the best for mobility and burst damage IMO. Thundercall is the best for speed (attack speed, travel, startup time etc) IMO. Shadowcast is the best for hitstuns and dps IMO.

OP, you should probably be wearing Beetle Armor and your Mage friend may want Spectre. Both sets are Vanilla armors, no Calamity bosses needed. Once you get armored up, you may want to go back and finish those bosses that you skipped. Also, don’t forget to use/get the permanent stat-boosting items unique to this mod:
