Standard job: Variable day schedule, anywhere from 4-24 hours. End of shift is "when the work is done." Work every week day and typically 1/4 weekends. Typical work week 50-60 hours.

Jun 19, 2009 · As far as Anesthesiology vs. EM, I would say EM has better "lifestyle" b/c they work less hours (probably an average of 35 vs. an average of 50 or so) and they are never on call (barring mass casualty or you have to cover for a sick co-worker). NO CALL for EM. and you only work like half the month for full time pay.
Another way to become a critical care physician is 3 years of internal medicine residency followed by a 3-year critical care fellowship. I wouldn't let salary guide your choice, however. Both specialties will give you more money than most other specialties with the chance to become partner in very lucrative practices.
